Description of La France Gourmande

Throughout the regions of France, fairs and festivals attract locals and tourists alike, whatever the month. Few can resist the lure of markets as regional specialities and mouth-watering delicacies are fervently discussed amidst the bustle of the crowds. The season’s bounty is brought to the market or fair - cherries, chèvres, nuts, foie gras, oysters, huile d’olives - all abundant reasons to celebrate.

La France Gourmande explores the age-old customs that make up France’s cultural and culinary history. Many local traditions are revealed, building up a wonderful picture of French life, from the luscious Olive Oil Festival in Nyons in February, to the festive Melon Fair in Provence in July and the Organic Products Fair in Montauban in the autumn.
Marolyn Charpentier follows the French year from January to December and in each of the twelve chapters there are three events that reveal the practices of a still predominantly rural nation. For every fair or festival there is a simple recipe which makes use of local and seasonal ingredients. A gazetteer details all the relevant information for a particular area, including how to get there, where to stay, the best restaurants, and local attractions to visit.

Illustrated with evocative photographs and ephemera, La France Gourmande provides a unique companion guide to what is happening throughout France month by month, and reveals the diversity of the people and flavours of France.
